Four teams vie for State titles

Four local teams will compete for State championships this weekend.

DIVISION I

Mentor vs. Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller

Saturday, Dec. 7 at 3 PM

Canton Fawcett Stadium

In Division I, the Mentor Cardinals make their third appearance in the State championship, and seek their first state title in school history. The Cardinals last appearance in the state title game came back in 2006 when they lost to Hilliard Davidson, 36-35. Their overall playoff record is 23-13.

Led by Coach Steve Trivisonno, Mentor finished the regular season with a 9-1 record and then, racked up impressive wins over Brunswick, Stow-Monroe Falls, St. Ignatius and St. Edward, out-scoring their postseason opponents 152-41.

Road to State Championship:

First Round: Defeated Brunswick, 42-0

Regional Quarterfinals: Defeated Stow-Munroe Falls, 43-0

Regional Semifinals: Defeated St. Ignatius, 26-3

Regional Finals: Defeated St. Edward, 41-38

The Cardinals will face the defending Division I State champion, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller. Moeller finished the regular season 9-1 and is seeking its ninth State title in school history. This is Moeller's 13th appearance in the State final in school history.

DIVISION II

Cleveland Glenville vs. Cincinnati Loveland

Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 PM

Canton Fawcett Stadium

In Division II, the Glenville Tarblooders make their second appearance in the State championship, and seek their first state title in school history.  The Tarblooders’ only other appearance came back in 2009, where they lost to Hilliard Davidson, 16-15.  Their overall playoff record is 19-11.

Led by Coach Ted Ginn Sr., Glenville finished the regular season 9-1, with its only loss coming against Division I State semifinalist, St. Edward.  This postseason, the Tarblooders have out-scored their opponents, 142-32.

Road to State Championship:

Regional Quarterfinals: Defeated Brush, 35-0

Regional Semifinals: Defeated Bedford, 26-12

Regional Finals: Defeated Madison, 40-7

State Semifinals: Defeated Medina Highland, 41-13

The Tarblooders will face an undefeated Cincinnati Loveland team seeking its first state title in school history as this is its first appearance in the State finals in school history.  Loveland is coming off a thrilling double-overtime win over Zanesville, which was the fourth double-overtime game in OHSAA playoff history.

DIVISION III

St. Vincent-St. Mary vs. Trotwood Madison

Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7 PM

Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium

In Division III, the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish will be defending their state title as last year, they defeated Bellevue, 42-21, to be crowned Division III State champions.  St. Vincent-St. Mary’s makes its seventh state finals appearance and seeks its sixth state title in school history.  Their overall playoff record is 33-12.

Led by Coach Dan Boarman, the Fighting Irish enter the game undefeated.  This postseason, the Fighting Irish have outscored their opponents, 144-30.

Road to State Championship:

Regional Quarterfinals: Defeated Chagrin Falls, 52-7

Regional Semifinals: Defeated Poland, 35-7

Regional Finals: Defeated Hubbard, 40-7

State Semifinals: Defeated Marion Franklin, 17-9

The Fighting Irish face Dayton’s Trotwood Madison, the only seventh seed to advance to the State finals.  Trotwood Madison finished the regular season 7-2 and is seeking its second State championship in school history in this, its fifth state final appearance.  Trotwood has outscored their playoff opponents,  165-28.

DIVISION VI

Kirtland vs. Haviland Wayne Trace

Friday, Dec. 6 at 11 AM

Canton Fawcett Stadium

In Division VI, the Kirtland Hornets make their third State final appearance in three years, and seek their second State title in school history.  Last year, Kirtland came up short in the state championship game, losing to Coldwater, 10-9.  Kirtland has won 43 of its last 44 games and carry an overall playoff record is 17-7.

Led by Coach Tiger Laverde, Kirtland finished the regular season 10-0 and has outscored opponents, 161-35, this postseason.

Road to State Championship:

Regional Quarterfinals: Defeated McDonald, 57-0

Regional Semifinals: Defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 49-21

Regional Finals: Defeated Mogadore, 45-7

State Semifinals: Defeated Columbus Bishop Ready, 10-7

The Hornets will face Haviland Wayne Trace, who finished the season 9-1.  Wayne Trace is seeking its first State championship in school history as this is also their first-ever appearance in the State final.  Wayne Trace has outscored its playoff opponents, 217-59.
